In a recent webinar titled Shaping the Future of Water - From Connectivity to Operational Efficiency, organized by HMS Networks and Smart Water Magazine, with Envirochemie, Veolia, and the Industrial Cybersecurity Center as collaborators, a session on opportunities and challenges to apply smart water featured insightful discussions from industry leaders. Xavier Cardeña, Water & Wastewater Specialist at HMS Networks, Sebastian Spielhoff, Digital Service Group Leader at Envirochemie, and Ahmed Ganainy, Middle East & Turkey Digital Manager at Veolia, highlighted transformative approaches to integrating smart technologies into water management, emphasizing digitalization’s role in addressing operational, regulatory, and environmental challenges.

Xavier Cardeña introduced the "Water 4.0 Maturity Model" and outlined the model’s step-by-step framework for advancing water management — from computerization to predictive maintenance and machine learning. He stressed the importance of starting with robust hardware to collect and transmit data, stating, “Digitalization holds no value without the hardware to transmit data.” The model provides a roadmap for achieving data-driven, mature water systems through targeted technologies.

Sebastian Spielhoff noted that key issues like a flood of data, incident handling, compliance with stringent regulations, and a shortage of skilled operators highlight the need for streamlined digital solutions. He highlighted the importance of digital tools to support operators remotely and help with daily tasks such as reporting processes, and noted that digital transformation is a challenge and an opportunity at the same time.

Ahmed Ganainy shared Veolia’s vision for leveraging smart water technologies to optimize operational efficiency and sustainability. He discussed the "Process + Digital" approach, blending streamlined processes with digital innovation to meet sustainability goals. He also highlighted challenges such as resistance to change and cybersecurity concerns but underscored the global collaboration potential of smart water technologies. The session underscored the transformative potential of smart water technologies while addressing the challenges of implementation and collaboration in a digital age.
