The LIFE Waste2Coag project, co-funded by the EU LIFE programme (LIFE20 ENV/ES/000430) and coordinated by Global Omnium, aims to revolutionise wastewater treatment. This project is developing and testing an innovative Electrolytic System (ELS) technology designed to produce coagulants by directly treating brines and using metal scraps to produce electrodes, replacing the need for conventional non-renewable primary sources in line with circular economy concepts.
The First Innovation Workshop
On the 26th of March, the first Innovation Workshop for the LIFE Waste2Coag project took place at AIDIMME Technology Institute’s facilities in Valencia (Spain). The event, hosted by Isle Utilities in collaboration with AIDIMME, focused on industrial applications of the ELS technology in wastewater treatment. The purpose of this first Innovation Workshop of the project was to advance the project’s innovations closer to the market, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss progress and gather feedback.
More than 10 key external stakeholders from different sectors (industrial wastewater treatment, metal industry, EPC companies and manufacturers) joined the project partners to see the advances made and results from the industrial case study, participating in a subsequent engaging discussion session about the optimal opportunities for the technology and products to be adopted by the industrial sector. It was agreed by the sector that the innovations being developed and the coagulants produced by it are of interest and in line with the transition to a circular economy, providing also other potential added values such as reduced costs.
What Next?
This project is ongoing and opportunities for replication and transferability are being explored. The LIFE Waste2Coag pilot plant will be relocated to a new site to explore the suitability of the ELS technology for utilities (municipal wastewater treatment). A second Innovation Workshop will then be organised to explore the commercial interest and viability of the technology and new coagulants for this second application.

The LIFE Waste2Coag project, co-funded by the EU LIFE programme (LIFE20 ENV/ES/000430), aims to demonstrate an innovative and cost-efficient technology based on the electrolysis of brines to produce coagulants for the removal of pollutants in urban and industrial wastewaters, including emerging pollutants and pathogens.
LIFE Waste2Coag boosts the circular economy in water treatment plants and creates synergies with other sectors, as industrial scrap metallic wastes and brines generated in different industries are valorised, including wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and desalination plants (DP).
