The head of Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) has officially announced plans to initiate a tender process for a water desalination plant. Last July, SCZONE announced the construction of a water pump manufacturing centre, reports Zawya.
Waleid Gamal El-Dien revealed that preparations are currently underway in collaboration with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to launch the initial phase of the water desalination project.
The project is expected to have a production capacity of around 250,000 cubic meters per day. According to a statement released by SCZONE, this phase will soon be put out for international tender.
The Egyptian industrial and commercial centre said: “It should be noted that preparations are underway with a view to launching a global call for tenders for the first phase of the work.”
The statement further detailed that EBRD has been actively engaged with SCZONE since February 2023, working towards the digitalization of investor services and the re-engineering of over 60 services. These advancements are slated to become operational during the latter part of this year.
The facility is poised to enhance the provision of potable and irrigation water through desalination within the renowned economic zone, spanning an expansive 461 km² area along the Suez Canal's banks, susceptible to drought.
