Last Thursday, the European Commission notified Germany to meet a European Court of Justice ruling to conserve its waters against nitrate pollution, otherwise it could potentially be fined, reports Reuters.
Last year, in June, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Deutschland was violating EU law as it was failing to protect its waterways from nitrate pollution produced by agricultural sources.
In a statement, the Commission warned Germany was still in violation of the court ruling: “Germany’s subsequent actions have not fully remedied the deficiencies identified by the court.”
Reuters points out that the European Commission did not mention in its statement if it has asked the court to consider fines; however, under the European Union’s infringement procedure, financial penalties of either a daily payment or a lump sum, might ultimately be enforced.
