About the entity

Governor Tim Walz unveiled a $907 million infrastructure plan for Minnesota on Monday, highlighting key investments in clean water projects alongside public safety, transportation, and housing initiatives.

Of the total budget, 19%, or approximately $172 millionwould be allocated to water and transportation infrastructure. A significant portion, $113 million, would support water infrastructure grants and loans, aimed at addressing the state’s aging water systems and ensuring safe, reliable access to clean water for communities across Minnesota.

The remaining water-related investments include a portion of the plan's overall funding for flood risk reduction and dam safety repairs. Specifically, the proposal includes $9 million for flood mitigation efforts and $10 million for dam safety improvements, critical projects for safeguarding communities from water-related risks.

Governor Walz aims to address critical water needs while also strengthening public safety, economic development, and housing affordability in Minnesota

In addition to water infrastructure, the plan also emphasizes transportation, with $50 million earmarked for highway pavement projects. This comprehensive approach to infrastructure seeks to improve the overall resilience of Minnesota’s water and transportation systems.

Governor Walz's plan is partially funded by $700 million in general obligation bonds, with the remaining $207 million coming from a mix of other funding sources, including appropriation bonds, user-financed bonds, and trunk highway funds. These investments reflect the state's commitment to maintaining and improving the infrastructure that Minnesotans rely on daily.

With these proposed investments, Governor Walz aims to address critical water needs while also strengthening public safety, economic development, and housing affordability in Minnesota. The $113 million set aside for water projects is a clear indication of the administration's focus on maintaining a safe and sustainable water supply for residents, while also advancing flood protection and environmental protection measures.
