  • Oman issues tender for drainage channels, part of initiative to improve flood control

About the entity

Oman's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has issued a tender for consultancy services for the design and supervision of drainage channels at the Al-Khawd Recharge Dam, reports Zawya.

Issued on 9 September 2024, the tender invites bids from consultancy firms, with submissions due by 20 October 2024. This initiative forms part of a broader effort to mitigate flooding risks following the damage caused by Cyclone Gonu. A feasibility study conducted after the cyclone recommended upgrading the Al Khawd Recharge Dam and constructing a comprehensive flood protection system, which includes drainage channels and three new dams.

The consultancy services will involve preparing detailed designs, tender documents, and overseeing the construction of protective walls and culverts to manage water flow efficiently.

The designs for the three protection dams have been finalised:

  1. Al Khawd Dam (AK01): This large dam, with a capacity of 77 million cubic meters, is designed to control the middle course of Wadi Samail and protect Al Khawd village.
  2. Nafah Dam (NA01): With a capacity of 42.6 MCM, this dam manages water flow from Wadi Mansah, a crucial tributary of Wadi Samail.
  3. Multaqa Dam (ML01-2): Located on Wadi Jaylay, this dam will store 20 MCM of water.

Engineering firms that have purchased bid documents include Renardet SA and Partners Consulting Engineers; AZD Engineering Consultancy; Artelia Muscat Engineering Consultancy; Atlas International Engineering Consultants; Al Manarah Engineering Consultancy; Arq and Partners Consulting Engineers; Modon Engineering; VIA International Engineering Consultancy; Alsas Engineering Consultancy and Services. The last date for purchasing these documents is 29 September 2024.

This project underscores Oman’s commitment to improving its water management infrastructure and enhancing its resilience to extreme weather events.
