About the entity

The Saur Group announced that its subsidiaries, Saur France (lead contractor) and Stereau, have been awarded a contract by the Lille European Metropolis (MEL) to oversee the extension, reconstruction, and operation maintenance of the Wattrelos wastewater treatment plant. This initiative, undertaken as part of a consortium, is among the most significant wastewater treatment modernization projects in France over the next decade.

The modernization aims to enhance the plant's capacity and optimize rainwater pollution management, addressing the growing needs of MEL. By integrating efficient rainwater treatment, wastewater optimization, and renewable energy production, the revamped Wattrelos plant will exemplify environmental excellence.

The contract entails the extension and modernization of the plant at a cost of €200 million, alongside its operation by Saur France over a 12-year period for €93 million.

Major expansion to increase and modernize treatment capacity

The Wattrelos plant, originally commissioned in 1986 and renovated in the early 2000s, currently processes wastewater for 417,000 population equivalents across 15 municipalities in MEL and the Belgian municipality of Mouscron. Upon completion of the modernization in 2031, its capacity will increase by over 20% to 511,500 population equivalents.

This high-performance project incorporates innovative technologies with an adaptable design to meet future regulatory standards and integrate new solutions, including micropollutant treatment and the reuse of treated wastewater.

A new plant that generates energy and respects the environment

The new Wattrelos wastewater treatment plant will set a benchmark for energy efficiency, contributing to regional decarbonization efforts. It is designed to generate more energy than it consumes through various sustainability initiatives.

High-efficiency, energy-saving equipment will be installed, including 6,000 m² of photovoltaic panels and multiple hydroelectric turbines, covering over 10% of the plant's electricity needs. The remaining energy requirements will be met through a green energy purchasing contract and waste heat recovery from equipment. Additionally, biomethane produced from sludge treatment will equate to the annual gas consumption of 2,800 residents, while dried sludge will be repurposed for heating 1,500 homes.

The plant's operation will adhere to stringent performance, environmental, and community well-being standards. It will be certified under ISO 55 001, ensuring sustainable and optimized asset management, reinforcing the longevity and value of this essential infrastructure.

Estelle Grelier, President of Saur France: “This large-scale project aligns with the Saur Group's strategy, placing water transition at the core of its development. As a driver of local sustainable ecology, the future facility will be a strategic asset for the region, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. By becoming a net energy producer, it will serve as an inspiring model of resilience, integrating innovative technologies and a scalable design to meet the highest standards. Its efficient, secure, and forward-thinking management will contribute to the region's quality of life and sustainable balance.”

Hugo Bardi, Chairman of Stereau: “With this extension-reconstruction project, Stereau reaffirms its expertise in designing and building major infrastructure. We have once again demonstrated our ability to tackle complex environmental challenges with simple, high-performance, and scalable solutions. The site will exemplify environmental performance by combining optimal wastewater treatment with the production of green, local energy, addressing key challenges such as resource conservation, circular economy, and decarbonization.”
