Thessaloniki Water Supply & Sewerage SA (EYATH S.A.), serving over 1.2 million citizens in Greece's second-largest city, is embarking on a major modernization of its water infrastructure in collaboration with Itron, a leader in energy and water management solutions, and IDATOR, an Itron channel partner. The three organizations are working together to deploy Itron’s Smart Water Solutions as part of a digital transformation that will span the next five years.

EYATH S.A. aims to reduce its water footprint by 20% by 2030, with a focus on minimizing water loss in treated water. To support this ambitious goal, the utility will implement Itron’s advanced Smart Water Solutions, which include the Itron Intelis® wSource smart water meters, Itron's Smart Water head-end system, and the meter data management (MDM) platform. This technology will provide EYATH S.A. and its customers with enhanced accuracy and visibility into water consumption, enabling more efficient management of water loss.

One of the key benefits of the new system is the ability to detect leaks quickly, reducing non-revenue water loss. The Intelis wSource meters are designed to be durable, intelligent, and accurate throughout their lifetime, offering advanced leak detection capabilities and real-time alerts. Itron's Temetra®, a cloud-based meter data collection solution, will seamlessly collect data from these smart water meters, providing actionable insights that improve customer satisfaction and reduce water waste.

Itron’s MDM system, a fully hosted software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution, will allow EYATH S.A. to manage not only its Itron meters but also devices from other vendors

In addition, Itron’s MDM system, a fully hosted software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution, will allow EYATH S.A. to manage not only its Itron meters but also devices from other vendors. This integration simplifies the modernization process, enabling EYATH to adopt new technologies while continuing to manage existing infrastructure.

“We are advancing our plan to improve the quality of water supply services while maintaining a commitment to environmental sustainability,” said Alexandros Mentes, director of the Strategic Planning, Projects & Development Department at EYATH S.A. “Itron’s solutions will be instrumental in reducing water losses and driving our digital transformation.”

Don Reeves, Itron’s senior vice president of Outcomes, emphasized the role of Itron’s technology in helping EYATH achieve its goals. “Itron’s Smart Water Solutions serve as the ideal tool to help EYATH S.A. reduce its water footprint and advance its strategic plan,” Reeves said. “Deploying Itron’s solutions in Thessaloniki serves as a model for other utilities, showcasing the advantages of upgrading water infrastructure with advanced technology.”

George Efstratiadis, managing director of IDATOR, highlighted the local expertise the company brings to the project. “As an official Itron Channel Partner based in Greece, we bring unmatched local presence and proven expertise to support EYATH. This partnership, along with our trusted partner FLOWTEC, accelerates decisions and streamlines day-to-day operations, ensuring a smooth and efficient deployment,” Efstratiadis explained.

This collaboration marks one of the largest digital transformations in Greece’s water sector, and it sets a strong precedent for other utilities looking to embrace modern solutions for water management. Through this initiative, Thessaloniki is not only improving its water infrastructure but also reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability.
