ANSTO is a research center that is part of the pulse of the water sector. Here we bring together everything it publishes on Smart Water Magazine: its news, its blogs and the events it takes part in.

Research brings a better understanding of the stability of very old groundwater
Research brings an understanding of the stability of groundwater organic matter from deep basins that is essential for management of this valuable resource in the future Australian and American groundwater experts have developed a new conceptual framework that describes the degradation of carbon over time in the subsurface Highly sensitive isotopic and radiocarbon dating techniques at ANSTO, chemical analyses at UNSW and ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry at Florida State University (US) were combined to develop the framework

New approach can improve monitoring of contaminants in groundwater
A new approach to distingish between multiple sources of contaminants in groundwater could have significant implications for better monitoring, management and remedial action globally. A large international collaboration used a combination of isotopic and conventional techniques, including contaminants of merging concern, to fingerprint the source of pollutants at a Victorian site. Environmental research scientist Dr Dioni Cendon, an expert in groundwater and co-author, supervised measurements of the stable and radioactive isotopes at ANSTO for the study and assisted with the interpretation of all the data.

Ancient groundwater enters food web
“We suspected that aquatic ecosystems in areas subject to groundwater flows from the Great Artesian Basin might be using carbon from subterranean groundwater as source energy,” said lead author Dr Debashish Mazumder, who used data from previous studies by ANSTO groundwater experts Dr Suzanne Hollins and Dr Karina Meredith. Professor Neil Saintilan of Macquarie University, Dr […]
