  • Book on the large dams of Gomera (Canary Islands)

August 2022: present history. The book LARGE DAMS ON LA GOMERA [256 pages in black and white] provides an in-depth look at the 24 large dams that were built in the 20th century on La Gomera (Canary Islands). Link to the book. Amazon.

Foreword by engineer Manuel G. de Membrillera Ortuño ("Chairman" of the Technical Committee for Dam Surveillance and Auscultation of ICOLD), dedicated to the memory of engineer Emilio Benítez Pascual (1933 - 2017) and includes the appendices of the large dams of La Vieja, Tapahuga, Benchijigua and Construction of large dams in the Canary Islands.

Tapahuga Dam [JG]

This book provides a new REGISTRY of the 24 large dams that are in operation in La Gomera. 24 large dams built in its abrupt geography of 369 km² of difficult geology. The book is very well illustrated and with a didactic design that facilitates the understanding of its contents, something that readers are very grateful for.

Benchijigua Dam [Drones Gomera]

Thus, after that synthesis work provided at the X Jornadas Españolas de Presas (Seville, 2015), we now extend that research exercise with this register, with the 'objectives' of achieving better control and safety of these portentous structures and their cultural recognition as works of the past that give meaning to the present: living heritage of the island of La Gomera (Canary Islands).

Encantadora Dam [Drones Gomera]

I would like to close this brief description of the book with the last paragraph of Manuel's magnificent prologue: In the light of the new dam safety regulations in force in Spain since 2021, all these dams must have their safety level reassessed and it is very likely that several of them will require surveys and actions to improve their conditions. Undoubtedly, this new publication will be an unavoidable reference to address the safety reviews of these dams, while consolidating a very valuable knowledge, both in cultural and engineering terms. I hope that Jaime González will continue his research work on Canary Island dams and that some of these large dams on La Gomera will be able to realise their potential to ensure the necessary energy transition in the context of climate change.
