Caño Cristales is a Colombian river located in the Sierra de la Macarena, in the province of Meta. It is also known as "River of Gods", "The Rainbow River", or "The Most Beautiful River in the World". These knicknames are for a reason: for approximately six months (from July until November), the bed of the river becomes extremely colourful. You can see shades of blue, black, green, yellow and chiefly red, which is caused by the Macarenia clavigera plants located on the riverbed.
The fast-flowing river is a succession of rapids, waterfalls, brooks and pits. The water flows from the southern plateau of the Macarena mountain range, where its source is located.
This rainbow river runs along a tropical forest and barely reaches one hundred kilometres in length.
Caño Cristales ends without its bright colours as these are lost on the way through La Cachivera, at the height of a royal road, which crosses it.
The crystalline water of Caño Cristales flows along a winding path full of waterfalls.
