Egypt partners with private sector to build four desalination plants

The Egyptian Minister of Finance, Mohamed Maait, said on Thursday that Egypt will announce four new desalination facilities in partnership with the private sector in January 2021, reports Zawya.

In a statement, the Minister informed that one of the four desalinations plants will be built in Matrouh’s Hamam City with a capacity of 190,000 cubic metres per day. The other three facilities will be constructed one in Safaga, the third in El-Quseir, and the fourth in Marsa Alam with capacities ranging between 20,000 and 40,000 cubic metres per day.

All four new seawater desalination plants will be designed, built, operated and financed by the private sector, read the statement. The Egyptian government will facilitate the land and licenses with a future plan of purchasing the desalinated water to be pumped into the national network. Maait affirmed that this will not affect water tariffs.

In order to achieve sustainable development and make a better use of the water resources, Egypt plans to build 19 seawater desalination plants between 2020 and 2025.
