Sub-Saharan Africa left to pick up $8.4 billion cost of healthcare infections
Infections caused by lack of handwashing facilities, clean water and decent toilets are costing Sub-Saharan Africa $8.4 billion each year, finds new data from WaterAid and the World Bank. At least half of these infections could be prevented by improved water, sanitation and hygiene – saving at least 138,000 lives every year as well as billions of dollars. WaterAid is calling for every healthcare facility, everywhere to have these basic services, to tackle the spread of diseases threatening future pandemics and to fight against one of the defining global health threats of our time – antibiotic resistance.
