  • Resilience demands purpose-driven digital solutions

We often hear that digital transformation is reshaping water management. But I believe it’s actually the other way around, or at least more nuanced than that. The challenges facing the water sector are what truly drive the need for new approaches to management. And to meet these challenges, we need tools that enable more insightful, data-driven, and foundational decision-making.

This demand is pushing technology providers to evolve, to develop solutions that genuinely fit the needs of the industry and its organizations. If we think of digital transformation as a standalone solution, disconnected from the realities of water management, we risk falling short in our efforts to address the sector’s most pressing issues.

So, what are the challenges?

To manage water effectively, the first requirement is access to trusted and sustainable sources. As a water engineer, I believe this is where the problems begin. Too often, we face either too little water or too much. This variability makes water management inherently complex. We've seen rivers and lakes reach critically low levels, and pollution threatens both public health and water security. As populations grow and industries expand, the demand for water increases, and so does the urgency to manage it better.

Technology supports greater accuracy, interoperability, and adaptability to organizational needs

But better management must be proactive and resilient, grounded in science and proven solutions. Uncertainty and reactive approaches can no longer guarantee a sustainable future.

And this is where technology enters, but with purpose. Technology must adapt to organizational needs, not dictate them. When technology leads without purpose or fails to integrate with real business challenges, it is destined to fail. The issue today isn’t the lack of technology; it’s the fragmentation of solutions and lack of openness and interoperability. To drive meaningful outcomes, organizations need connected, adaptable solutions, not just more tech.

Having worked with technologies for the water sector for 20 years, I’ve seen first-hand how impactful, purposeful, user-centric innovation can be, and how critical it is to bridge these gaps. I’ve seen promising solutions fall short because they didn’t meet real operational needs, systems that couldn’t connect, and teams forced to work around technology instead of with it.

We often hear that resistance to technology comes from fear. Fear of job displacement or reluctance to change. But let’s look at our daily lives: people love and embrace technology when it makes their work easier and more meaningful. In fact, many are even willing to pay more for solutions that deliver real value. The same applies to the workplace. So, the real question is: is technology truly adapting to the needs of the water industry?

At Bentley Systems, we don’t just build software, we build solutions for our users. Every year, we’re proud to hear stories submitted to the Going Digital Awards at our Year in Infrastructure (YII) conference, showcasing how our technology supports greater accuracy, interoperability, and adaptability to organizational needs.

Today, the call is louder than ever for solutions that support resilient infrastructure, solutions that ensure a sustainable water future through interoperable platforms, open applications, real-time optimization, and asset management.

And this means, digital solution providers must lead with purpose. They must design tools that adapt to the realities of water organizations and help transform how we manage water. As we shift toward a more digital mindset, we also open the door to attract digitally savvy professionals, enriching the knowledge base within organizations, and helping bridge the gap left by a retiring workforce. This shift also supports the retention of talented professionals, offering them meaningful work aligned with modern tools and values.

Digital transformation in the water sector is not about introducing innovation for innovation’s sake, it’s about responding to real, evolving needs. The challenges of water scarcity, variability, and infrastructure stress are reshaping how we manage water — and in turn, how technology must be designed.

Resilience demands purpose-driven digital solutions that are interoperable, adaptable, and built around the realities of water management. When technology evolves to serve these needs, we move closer to a future where water systems are not only smarter, but truly sustainable.
