  • 5 water saving tips for your business

In a corporate environment, the water bill can be a real nightmare, especially when you think about the fact that the price of water is increasing every year*. As a small business ourselves, we know that reducing our water consumption was cost savior for us. Want to know about how we improved water efficiency in our building? Here are some simple water conservation tips for your corporation to help you save money while saving the planet!

1. Use water-saving taps

People forgetting to turn off the taps is one of the most common ways to spend a lot of cash on water. Switching from traditional to automatic sensor taps which are only activated when they recognize hands underneath is a very simple way to make sure the bathrooms of your building do not become a source of financial distress!

2. Low Flush Toilets

Another equipment that increases your water bill is the toilets. Did you know that each time someone flushes the toilets, they actually use between 10 and 20 liters of water? Makes you think about how much could be saved here, right? One of the most efficient methods of making buildings water-efficient is to adopt low flush toilets which can save by up to 50% of their water consumption by using only 6 - or 3 with the reduced flush option - liters of water.

3. Catch Rainwater

You might wonder: why collecting rainwater? Well despite what you may think rainwater is relatively clean and to put it simply: free of charge! However in some countries, you may have to pay taxes if you have a water tank, so check the legislation where you live. But even if your country has such a policy, collecting rainwater can help you save as much as 40% of your water consumption. Plus if you think about taking care of your landscape with rainwater, studies have shown that plants actually prefer rainwater**! You can also use it for your water greedy toilets or for cleaning purposes.

4. Monitor your water usage and prevent water leaks

Even if you do your best to control the water usage of your building, there is little you can do against leaks. Sure you might stumble upon a tap leaking once in a while, but what about all the leaks that might occur in your plumbing system? Yes: 1 in 3 buildings is currently experiencing expensive leaks and 95% of leaks are missed without automated leak detection. With the very easy installation of the Shayp device onto your water meter you can reduce up to 30% of your water consumption simply by eradicating water leaks! Click here to learn more.

5.  Sustainable landscaping

You might want to think twice about how and when to water your garden or plants that you might have in your building or office. Indeed try to privilege watering early or at the end of the day. This practice prevents water from evaporating due to exposure to the sun and heat. And don’t forget to only water when necessary! If the rain has not already taken care of that for you, you only need to water your lawn once a week. If you are using an automatic watering, make sure it was properly set-up, and that you are not watering the sidewalk! And check if the automation shuts off when it’s a rainy day.

Some additional management tips:

- Give someone the responsibility to implement these measures at the office.

- Educate your employees about the waste of water and how to save it, whether it be at the office or even at home!

- With the Shayp app where you can follow your water consumption at any time, you can make your employees aware of the liters of water spent each day at the office and thus encourage them to control their water use.
