CDP: Water is rising up the corporate agenda

272 out of nearly 12,000 scored companies recognized on CDP’s annual A List. Water and forests rising up the corporate agenda, as more companies than ever taking leading action. 14 pioneering companies awarded Triple A scores for their work across climate change, forests and water security. Fall in number of corporates on climate A List as bar is raised on climate leadership. A record 13,000+ companies reported environmental data through CDP in 2021. But nearly 17,000 worth US$21 trillion still failing to disclose.

Cost of water risks to business five times higher than cost of taking action

US$301 billion of business value is at risk unless companies improve and innovate around water use, while the cost of response estimated at US$55 billion. From ‘waterloop factories’ (L’Oréal) to no-rinse shampoos (Unilever), to eliminating hazardous chemicals (PVH) – companies are innovating with products and processes that dramatically reduce water use and pollution. Water savings and water reuse mean nearly 2 in 3 companies are reducing or maintaining water withdrawals. Yet progress remains stagnant on pollution, with just 4.4% of companies making progress against pollution reduction targets. 20% surge in companies disclosing water data in 2020.

Companies worth $15 trillion revealed on CDP 2020 ‘A List’ of environmental leaders

313 companies named on CDP’s prestigious ‘A List’ this year for environmental transparency and action, a 45% increase on 2019. Out of the 5,800+ companies scored by CDP on their climate change, forests and water security disclosures, just the top 5% made the A List. A List companies are worth a combined $15 trillion in market cap. AstraZeneca, Danone, Firmenich, HP Inc, KAO Corporation, Klabin S/A, Mars, Symrise AG and Mitsubishi Electric are among those recognized on the A List. 10 pioneering leaders achieved a ‘triple A’ score for climate, forests and water. The proportion of A List companies based in Asia has grown to 32%, now second after Europe and well ahead of North America. A record-breaking 9,600+ companies disclosed through CDP in 2020, a 70% increase since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015 and 14% up on last year.

CDP reports record disclosures, despite Covid-19, as corporate environmental action rises

Over 10,000 companies, cities, states and regions disclosed data through CDP on climate change, water security and deforestation issues in 2020. This includes over 9,600 companies, worth over 50% of global market capitalisation. The number of corporate disclosures is up 14% this year on last, and over 70% since 2015 when the Paris Agreement was signed.

Just 1 in 10 fashion companies show awareness of water pollution across whole value chain

Of 136 fashion & textile companies requested by investors and customers to disclose water impacts through CDP, less than half (62) provided data in 2019 Only seven (or 11%) of these 62 companies (including Gap Inc, H&M and Kering) are showing awareness of water pollution across their whole value chain. Just one of the 62 companies (H&M) mentions microplastics or microfibers, despite the production, use and disposal of textiles being a major source of microplastics. Better water management is good business: companies report over US$180 million in business opportunities related to water pollution reduction. Less than a quarter (23%) of analyzed companies are setting targets or goals to reduce water pollution while a mere 6% monitor and report on progress.
