  • Acciona Agua optimises the supply of drinking water in Asunción, Paraguay
  • It will optimise the supply of drinking water to more than 1.5 million people using real-time automated remote control of the network.

ACCIONA Agua has implemented the new telecontrol system for the water supply network in Asunción (Paraguay), a project that optimises the supply of drinking water to more than 1.5 million people.

The system has been designed to be scalable, and can be expanded to cover the entire metropolitan area (Greater Asunción) in the future. It represents a major upgrade to the management of the city's water supply using cutting-edge technology.

As a result, Empresa de Servicios Sanitarios de Paraguay S.A. (ESSAP), which is entrusted with providing drinking water and sanitation, will have the necessary infrastructure and technology to oversee and control the network in real time, on an automated basis.

The project includes automation and remote control of the Viñas Cué drinking water treatment plant, 16 wells and 15 distribution centres throughout Greater Asunción. Additionally, two redundant data processing centres have been built to monitor the network, one at the ESSAP headquarters and one at the Viñas Cué drinking water treatment plant.

A SCADA system provides detailed up-to-date information about all the network assets. This provides greater traceability, detailed performance indicators and real-time alerts that facilitate maintenance work.

The telecontrol system measures reservoir levels and distribution centre and well performance, making it possible to detect and address incidents as efficiently as possible.

The system also makes it possible to manage the network automatically and remotely, so that it can operate autonomously on the basis of water demand and availability.

This automation and control system is fundamental for proper functioning of the water distribution networks, since it provides accurate real-time knowledge of the processes taking place in the network.

Programmable automata with digital inputs and outputs ensure that signals are received from the assets and processed, and that a response is issued in accordance with preset parameters to provide control of key assets.

This project, awarded in 2016 with a value of around €2.2 million and financed by the World Bank through the BIRF 7710-PY loan, was ACCIONA Agua's first contract in Paraguay, a country where the company is currently working on the sewer network for Asunción bay and metropolitan area.

Two years ago, a consortium made up of ACCIONA Agua and ADASA obtained a contract to implement automation and remote control of the water supply networks for four cities in Morocco (Settat, Nador, Meknes and Ifrane), serving about 5.3 million people, in what was the first project of ACCIONA Agua's Automation and Control Department for a third party.
