About the entity

ACCIONA
The water business of ACCIONA concentrates on water treatment and reverse osmosis desalination, a technology in which it is the world leader.

ACCIONA has been awarded a contract for the operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) in the lower and middle-high river basins of the Arroyo Culebro, whose waters are managed by Canal de Isabel II, SA. Built by the company towards the end of 2000, both plants will treat the wastewater from six large towns in the metropolitan area of Madrid.

The contract is for five years and will represent revenues of almost 35 million euros. The ‘Arroyo Culebro Cuenca Media-Alta’ WWTP will treat wastewater from Leganés, Fuenlabrada, Humanes and Parla, while the ‘Cuenca Baja’ plant will carry out the same function for Getafe, Pinto and Fuenlabrada.

The improvements to the facilities will benefit a population of 2.5 million, will mean a maximum treatment capacity of four million cubic metres and an annual flow rate of 50 million cubic metres.

State-of-the-art technology in water treatment

The Arroyo Culebro Cuenca Baja WWTP applies co-digestion of sludge processes, whereby it can increase its normal electricity production by 40%.

For its part, the Cuenca Media-Alta WWTP has advanced tertiary technology that is cutting-edge in Europe. Through advanced processes such as ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis, it is able to supply 12,400 cubic metres a day of high-quality regenerated water.

This WWTP also has a wastewater regeneration station that sends regenerated water for the irrigation of parks and gardens in the towns of Getafe, Fuenlabrada, Parla, Humanes, Alcorcón and Pinto. In the future, this service will be extended to Leganés and Rivas-Vaciamadrid.
