ACCIONA has been awarded to design and build a reverse osmosis desalination plant in Doha (Qatar). The plant will have a capacity of 500 million liters per day, equivalent to supplying 2 million people with drinkable water, and has a budget of around US$500 million (€475 million).
ACCIONA's work will include the engineering, assembly, and commissioning of the facility for its client, Samsung, and is part of a major water and energy project in the country promoted by Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation.
Qatar turned to reverse osmosis desalination as a key strategy to secure its population's drinking water supply. Since 2016, reverse osmosis plants have played a crucial role in its water infrastructure, and ACCIONA has led this technological evolution.
The first milestone in the use of reverse osmosis technology in the country's desalination plants was the Ras Abu Fontas 3 plant, with a capacity of 165,000m³ per day to supply more than 1.1 million people.
ACCIONA also built the Umm Al Houl 1 and 2 desalination plants in Doha, each producing 284,000m³ per day to supply a total of 2.5 million people.
ACCIONA established its first office in the Middle East in 2008 in Dubai and subsequently opened offices in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, countries from which ACCIONA has developed several infrastructure projects, especially in the world of desalination.
