ACCIONA completes construction work on the Riachuelo system in Argentina

  • ACCIONA completes construction work on the Riachuelo system in Argentina
  • The construction of a new pre-treatment plant and more than 30 kilometres of tunnels will improve service quality and prevent wastewater pollution.

About the entity

ACCIONA
The water business of ACCIONA concentrates on water treatment and reverse osmosis desalination, a technology in which it is the world leader.

ACCIONA, in a joint venture with FISIA ITALIMPIANTI (WeBuild Group), has completed work on Lot 2 of the Riachuelo System, awarded to the consortium by AySA (Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos S.A.). The commssioining phase will now begin. The main objective of the project is to reduce the pollution load of wastewater in the Matanza-Riachuelo basin, one of the most contaminated areas in the country, before it flows into the River Plate.

The present system consists of a mega-sewer, a pre-treatment plant and an outfall. Lot 2, carried out by ACCIONA and its partner, includes the creation of a new inlet pumping station with a capacity of 36 m³/second, as well as the construction of a new pre-treatment plant and an outlet pumping station. Once operational, the system will transport more than two million cubic metres of effluent per day.

The project brings significant benefits to the area in terms of public health, environment and social development, improving the quality of service and preventing wastewater effluent pollution in the Riachuelo basin, benefiting more than 4.3 million people. It is estimated that a further 1.5 million inhabitants could benefit from the sewerage network in the future.

This project is the largest World Bank-supported sanitation initiative in Latin America and the Caribbean, marking a milestone in Argentina's history by providing a sustainable solution in one of the country's most polluted areas. It is also the first significant expansion of the main sewerage system in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area in more than 70 years.

With the completion of the construction work and the start-up phase, ACCIONA reaffirms its commitment to developing sustainable infrastructures that enhance people's quality of life and protect the environment.
