About the entity

ACCIONA
The water business of ACCIONA concentrates on water treatment and reverse osmosis desalination, a technology in which it is the world leader.

Themes

ACCIONA, in partnership with Aguas do Algarve (AdA), has incorporated 12 new ‘zero-emission’ vehicles for the maintenance of the sanitation network of the Nascente area in the Algarve (Portugal).

These electric vehicles will mean that the emission of 37.5 tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere will be avoided per year, compared to the emission from an equivalent combustion-engine vehicle.

The new Renault Kangoo vehicles will operate in the area between Vilamoura and Vila Real de Santo António, and will help to improve the efficiency of the operation, conservation and maintenance services for the sanitation systems that Aguas do Algarve have commissioned to ACCIONA.

These services include a seven-year contract for the maintenance of 230 kilometres of piping, 72 pumping stations and 44 wastewater treatment plants that provide a service to almost 463,000 people living in the area. This helps to improve energy efficiency and the optimization of the different water treatment processes involved.

The use of the new electric vehicles also means major practical advantages such as access to restricted movement areas (e.g. low-emission zones) and the use of priority roads or special parking areas in certain places.

Furthermore, the maintenance cost is 33% lower than for a diesel vehicle.

The entry into service of the twelve sustainable vehicles is part of the Decarbonization Plan sponsored by ACCIONA to bring about a 60% reduction in its emissions by 2030 and achieve total decarbonization before 2050. This includes the transition to the sustainable management of the end-to-end water cycle in urban settings.
