ACCIONA has been awarded the contract for operational and engineering services to enhance the efficiency of 1,165 kilometres of drinking water supply networks in various locations across Costa Rica, including the country’s capital, San José.
The €18 million contract covers: a first phase of analysis and design of hydraulic models and network sectorization, and then a series of improvements will be implemented to optimize the operation of the system, including the large-scale installation of meters, the incorporation of macro-meters and pressure-reducing valves, as well as the implementation of control systems for fraud detection.
This will reduce the number of water leaks and speed up their detection and repair, minimising drinking water losses with the resulting economic and environmental benefit.

The networks included in the contract are located in three areas of the country: San José, the Greater Metropolitan Area of Guadalupe, and the districts of Guácimo and Limón on the Atlantic coast.
ACCIONA has been present in Costa Rica since 2012. In the Water sector, the company built the Los Tajos WWTP, the nation’s largest wastewater treatment plant, which provides a service to more than one million people in the metropolitan area of San José.
For its part, ACCIONA Energía has been operating the 49.5 MW Chiripa wind farm at Tilarán (Guanacaste province) since 2014. This facility produces more than 200 million kilowatt-hours, equivalent to the consumption of around 80,000 Costa Rican households.
