ACCIONA will renovate one of London's main water treatment plants

  • ACCIONA will renovate one of London's main water treatment plants
  • It will build a new pumping station, design a new filtration system to ensure water quality, and improve the electrical systems.

About the entity

ACCIONA
The water business of ACCIONA concentrates on water treatment and reverse osmosis desalination, a technology in which it is the world leader.

ACCIONA will renovate the Coppermills Water Treatment Plant, which currently provides a third of the drinking water to the Greater London area. The company will be responsible for the design, construction, and commissioning of the infrastructure. Once the work is completed, the plant will be transferred to the client, Thames Water, a private company responsible for supplying water to most of the British capital.

A total of £400 million (€465 million) will be invested to improve the plant's reliability and ensure that the growing population's drinking water needs are met.

Located in the Lea Valley, Coppermills treats and supplies clean water to Greater London, which includes 32 municipalities surrounding the capital, as well as the City, its historic center.

The current 60-year-old plant requires modernization. With the support of Jacobs as the lead designer, ACCIONA will build a new pumping station, launch a new filtration and treatment system to ensure high water quality, and improve the facility's electrical supply systems.

Local experience

ACCIONA began operating in the UK in 2003. In early 2022, the North London Waste Authority awarded ACCIONA a turnkey contract to develop the Edmonton EcoPark waste-to-energy plant, located in North London, with a treatment capacity of 700,000 tons annually and the ability to supply electricity and heating to 50,000 homes.

In 2019, ACCIONA was awarded the construction and operation of another similar plant in Aberdeen, Scotland, called the NESS Energy Project, with a treatment capacity of 150,000 tons annually.
