Built and currently operated by ACCIONA, the Adelaide Desalination Plant will increase production to supply 40GL of water by July 2020 to help ease the drought in the Murray River and Darling River basins, which is seriously affecting farmers in the region.
The Australian Government has reached an agreement to support farmers affected by one of the most serious droughts seen by the country in recent years that is seriously affecting crop and livestock farming.
On Sunday 10 November, the Premier of South Australia, Steven Marshall, and the Minister for Environment and Water of South Australia, David Speirs, visited the Adelaide Desalination Plant accompanied by ACCIONA’s Plant Manager, Javier Artal.
The arrangement between the Australian Government and ACCIONA will lead to the supply of 40 GL of water by July 2020 and an additional 60 GL by July 2021. This is a one-off agreement due to current conditions and will not impact water prices in Adelaide or water security.
“It is time to increase production by the desalination plant so that water can be made available to the farmers affected by this drought”, said David Speirs during his visit.
