Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi inaugurated the El-Gabal El-Asfar wastewater treatment plant (Phase II – Stage II) in Cairo, with a delegation from the African Development Bank, led by Yacine Fal, Deputy Director General for North Africa.

The visit to the project site was combined with the launch of a massive housing program for disadvantaged people who will benefit from improved housing as well as access to clean water.

The African Development Bank invested US$58 million in Phase II – Stage II of the Gabal El-Asfar wastewater treatment plant, which provides a cost effective and environmentally friendly treatment facility for about 2.5 million people.

“The El-Gabal El-Asfar wastewater treatment plant project in Khanka in eastern Cairo aims to increase the treatment capacity of the plant, which is needed as a result of population growth. It will, thus contribute to improving the water environment and sanitation in the capital,” President El-Sisi said at the inauguration of the plant in which the government invested EGP18 billion (about US$1,005 billion) throughout its various development phases.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said, “The project is one of three such huge projects worldwide.”

The project aims to raise the production capacity of the existing plant by about 500,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day.

By investing in the Gabal El-Asfar wastewater treatment plant, the African Development Bank is helping protect Egypt’s population, ecosystems and water resources.
