The American Membrane Technology Association (AMTA) is pleased to announce a new Executive Director, Mr. John Tonner, effective August 1, 2022. 

John Tonner is President of Water Consultants International, a leading desalination consulting firm. Previously he was the Chief Operations and Chief Commercial Officer of a NASDAQ listed company with operations in North America and the Caribbean. Mr. Tonner began working in the desalination and water treatment industry in 1985 and has more than 35 years of experience with both thermal and membrane technologies.

John served on the AMTA Board of Directors and South Central Membrane Association from 2015-2017 and has been a member of the International Desalination Association for three decades. He was a member of the World Health Organization Desalination Technical Committee and served on the U.S. National Academy of Science’s Research Committee for Advancing Desalination Technology.  John can be reached at jtonner@AMTAorg.com

His industry knowledge and decades of technical and executive experience will provide AMTA with a strong foundation for serving our membership, expanding our reach and building partnerships,” said Jill Miller, President, American Membrane Technology Association. 

AMTA’s current Executive Director, Ms. Kim Shugar, will continue to provide operational and executive support to AMTA through the end of 2022 to ensure a seamless transition.

“As the AMTA Board of Directors and membership welcomes John to lead our management team, we want to share our sincerest gratitude to Kim Shugar for her vision, diligence and tenacity in leading the organization for the past two years,” added Miller. “Kim has worked hard to bring stability to the association during a challenging period and we are grateful for her service.”
