Anglian Water’s @one Alliance has recently completed work in Holywell Row, Suffolk to increase the capacity of the sewer system, protecting homes and the local environment from flooding.
The £1.4 million project saw the installation of a new underground storage tank near Wildmere Lane, which will provide resilience to extreme weather events caused by climate change.
The tank can now capture 390,000 litres of rainwater during heavy rainfall until the network frees up. Then, it can be transported to Mildenhall Water Recycling Centre (WRC) to be fully treated before it’s returned safely back into the environment.
Suffolk is home to some of the most environmentally sensitive parts of the region, so protecting the quality of watercourses and sensitive habitats during extreme weather events is more important than ever.
Sarah Lovitt, Customer Co-Ordinator for the project said: “We’re really pleased to have recently completed our work in Holywell Row to protect the local community and the precious environment from future flooding events.
“As a result of climate change, we’re seeing more bouts of extreme weather, so it was important that we prepared the area to store extra storm water before it’s treated and returned to the environment.
“We’d like to thank our customers for their patience over the past few months while we completed this essential work.”
