  • Aqualia is recognized by the IDA for its leadership in water reuse
  • With the "IDA Exceptional Utility Leader in Water Reuse and Conservation Award" Aqualia is recognized for its outstanding strategy of implementing advanced conservation and reuse projects in the services it manages.

About the entity

Aqualia
Aqualia is the water management company owned by the citizen services group FCC (51%) and by the Australian ethical fund IFM Investors (49%). Aqualia is Europe's fourth largest private water company in terms of population served.

Aqualia has just received the "IDA Exceptional Utility Leader in Water Reuse and Conservation Award" in recognition for its outstanding management of public and private services that have successfully implemented innovative water reuse and conservation projects.

Shannon McCarthy, Secretary General of the International Desalination Association (IDA), expressed his thanks to Felix Parra for the “Aqualia’s incredible work” during the meeting that both have held today at the company's headquarters in Madrid. In a subsequent gathering, in which some of the company's directors have also participated, issues such as the upcoming challenges of the water management sector, innovation, and the next congresses that the IDA will organize in 2019 have been discussed.

The awards were announced by the Association at the “2018 IDA International Water Reuse and Recycling Conference: Making Every Drop Count”, which was held 24th-27th June in Valencia, Spain.

In addition to Aqualia, the other two award-winners were: Dr. Val S. Frenkel, PhD (USA) and Dow Water Solutions (Switzerland), which received the Outstanding Professional in Water Reuse and Conservation award and the Industry Technology and Innovation Leader in Water Reuse and Conservation award respectively.

Reputation of Aqualia in the water reuse and conservation field

Since 2009 and in collaboration with over 40 international research centres, Aqualia has implemented more than 30 R&D projects, generating 11 patents, most of them in the field of the circular economy and the water and energy reuse.

Water reuse in one of the pillars of Aqualia's circular economy commitment, but not exclusively. Through projects such as All-gas, SMART Green Gas or Methamorphosis, Aqualia is now enabling communities to use 100 % local biofuel obtained from wastewater, and energy for desalination has been cut by a factor of 10. These initiatives mark a bold step forward for the water sector and for citizens.

During 2017 and in the line of reuse and conservation, nearly 20 Aqualia projects were breaking new ground in biofuels, low energy desalination, smart metering and data analytics, in collaboration with corporate partners such as Gas Natural, Mahou, SEAT and IBM. Leading the way across areas covering Quality, Sustainability, Eco-efficiency and Smart Services, they are carried out by a fully committed team.
