Aquastill, one of the leaders in modular membrane distillation technology (using waste heat powering desalination of sea water), presents the results on their groundbreaking project on Bonaire.
Aquastill has proved as the first in their sector the concept of sustainable desalination
Aquastill is the first company to successfully put a project involving sustainable desalination of seawater by membrane distillation into practice. Meanwhile the installation has been running for 14 months, the unit produces up to 15.000 liters/day of safe water produced with waste heat from the generators. Because Aquastill membrane distillation thrives on waste heat, the system consumes only about 0.5 kWh/m3 distillate. Aquastill has achieved these sustainable results:
>50% lower fuel consumption
>80% lower carbon footprint

The project was initiated to develop a solution for sustainable desalination of seawater for Buddy Dive Bonaire, using an innovative concept of membrane distillation powered by waste heat from generators.
Therefore Aquastill has installed a membrane distillation unit at Buddy Dive Bonaire to provide safe water for this dive resort. The membrane distillation unit uses the waste heat from local diesel generators, saving electricity and lowering the carbon footprint of the desalination process.
Bonaire’s nature is stunning, both underwater as topside. We all would like to keep it that way, that’s why the focus on corporate social responsibility, sustainability and the attractiveness of the island is important. For the present generation, but also for the generations to come.
Buddy Dive Resort Bonaire is increasingly focusing on a level of social and environmental sustainability. Even though Bonaire is a small island, they want to create a better world together. Therefore, a higher energy efficiency was sought by Buddy Dive Resort after in all their business decisions.
