EIB grants US$100 million loan for Ecuador's water and sanitation

  • EIB grants US$100 million loan for Ecuador's water and sanitation

About the entity

European Investment Bank
The EIB is the European Union's bank. We are the only bank owned by and representing the interests of the European Union Member States. We work closely with other EU institutions to implement EU policy.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) will collaborate with the Development Bank of Ecuador (BDE) to improve water supply and sanitation networks across the country. The EIB’s USD 100 million loan will partially finance the construction and rehabilitation of water supply, wastewater, and stormwater networks throughout the country under Ecuador’s national program, “Water and Sanitation for All.”

Given the climate action and urban development dimensions of the investments supported by the Framework Loan, the EIB and BDE will collaborate with the German international cooperation agency (GIZ) to assist project promoters in cities with feasibility studies and other preparatory activities, as well as to develop and strengthen the capacities of the BDE and other local governments.

Currently, the Development Bank of Ecuador has a portfolio of 14 committed projects, and the European Investment Bank is negotiating a second credit line with the Development Bank for water and solid waste management projects.
