The USD 325 million loan agreement for the project “Universal Sanitation in Uruguay” was signed on Tuesday, April 9, in Montevideo, with the presence of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Azucena Arbeleche, the President of OSE, Raúl Montero, and FONPLATA’s Executive President, Luciana Botafogo.
The main purpose of the project is to expand sewage system in the interior of the country, increasing the coverage from 48% to 68%. The works will be conducted in 61 localities of 18 departments, implementing systems for the treatment and proper disposal of household effluents to preserve the environment.

The investment includes the installation of 812 kilometers of sanitation network, the construction of 43 new wastewater treatment plants, the refurbishment of 3 already existing ones in different cities, and the connection of more than 57,000 homes. This expansion will directly benefit 150,000 people, and, indirectly, more than half a million people, by improving the environmental condition of roads and waterways.
According to the President of OSE, “This loan will enable progress in achieving one of the main objectives of this administration, which is to substantially increase the coverage of sanitary sewage system in the interior of the country.”
On her part, the Executive President of FONPLATA pointed out the relevance of this project for improving the living conditions of thousands of Uruguayans, and added that, as the MERCOSUR Bank, it is of great importance for FONPLATA to contribute to the development of its member countries.
