WatEner kicks-off a project with AySA (Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos) in Buenos Aires to improve the efficiency of the drinking water distribution system within the water-energy nexus.
The INCLAM-WatEner consortium has been selected to carry out a pilot project in the water network of AySA in Buenos Aires (Argentina) to improve the efficiency of the drinking water distribution system.
The project belongs to the programme “Water-Energy Nexus: Improving efficiency and leveraging renewable energy opportunities of Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos S.A.” promoted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and financed with a Non-Reimbursable Technical Cooperation (TC) of the Bank, with resources from the Japan Special Fund. The purpose of the TC is to support AySA in efficiency improvement actions, Non-Revenue Water (NRW) reduction and the improvement of energy consumption of the company’s systems and facilities, among other aspects.

The implementation of WatEner® in AySA aims to improve the efficiency of their drinking water distribution system in the water-energy nexus. The project will particularly focus on reducing NRW using Artificial Intelligence techniques, real-time event monitoring, decision support systems and expert knowledge models.
The WatEner platform is the right technological solution for this project. It considers the existing corporate tools related to the supply system, incorporating and enhancing the models and IT applications in operation, and integrating data to convert them into useful, aggregated and accessible information for decision making in real-time. The technological growth evolution of the network and systems already installed is supported by the software’s flexibility and scalability.

This project, for which AySA has provided a team of dedicated professionals and experts, has kicked-off last February (24 months project length)and includes 2 phases: The implementation of the technological solution WatEner® and a second phase of platform live testing. Pilot project’s geographical scope is the Distrito Quilmes (Quilmes District), which feeds a population of almost 500,000 inhabitants, with a network of over 1,500 km, and with the singularity of being managed by direct pumping to the network (without any service reservoirs) and the use of smart control settings through pressure regulating valves.
After the first stage of consultancy where the existing corporate tools (GIS, SCADA, SAP, network mathematical model, etc.) will be detected, and data and information provided by the client will be analyzed, the integration procedures will be established. From there, it will be necessary to define the requirements and restrictions of the system (operating conditions, optimal service levels, meteorological data, etc.) for a better adaptation and calibration of the platform in AySA. Subsequently and in conformity with the scope of the project, the implementation of the other agreed platform modules will continue, and the platform will be live tested.
