Malawi flooding: emergency response underway

  • Malawi flooding: emergency response underway

About the entity

Islamic Relief
As an independent humanitarian and development organisation, Islamic Relief has been serving humanity for 34 years. With an active presence in over 40 countries across the globe, we strive to make the world a better and fairer place.

Islamic Relief emergency teams are helping people affected by heavy rains and flooding in southern Malawi.

The government has declared a state of emergency as over 468,000 people in 13 districts are affected by the deluge, which began earlier this month. Crops have been destroyed, many just weeks from harvest, and people have been forced to seek shelter in schools, churches and camps after their houses collapsed. Many farmers have lost their livestock which would have helped them earn an income to help them through this crisis.

At least 30 people are thought to have lost their lives, with the death toll expected to rise as the rainfall continues.

Food, water and sanitary facilities are critically needed, as is temporary shelter and assistance to rebuild and repair damaged homes.

Islamic Relief is already working in the region, where we are responding to previous localised floods as well as supporting orphaned children. We are now looking to upscale our response in the coming days.
