Northumbrian Water to improve water quality in Newcastle, UK

  • Northumbrian Water to improve water quality in Newcastle, UK
  • Work to improve tap water quality in Newcastle is due to get underway next month and customers are being invited to find out more.

About the entity

Northumbrian Water
Northumbrian Water Limited is a water company in the UK, providing mains water and sewerage services in the English counties of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham and parts of North Yorkshire, and also supplying water as Essex and Suffolk Water.

Northumbrian Water will be working to clean and upgrade the mains along a stretch of Shields Road and Dalton Street in Byker, as part of a £3 million investment across Tyneside.

The work, which is being carried out by supply partners, Fastflow Pipeline Services, is due to begin on Monday February 18, 2019 and should be complete by Thursday April 18, 2019.

Residents will be able to drop-by Northumbrian Water′s customer vehicle ‘Flo′ to discuss the scheme in more detail. The water company′s blue van will be located at the top of Robinson Street between 9.00am and 3.00pm on Monday January 21, 2019.

Northumbrian Water′s Project Manager, Graeme Ridley, said: "We′re committed to improving the quality of drinking water now, and into the future."

"We first spoke to customers back in September to let them know in advance about the work, as we know how busy the Shields Road area can be. We′ve taken on board the comments from back then and looked at our plans again, and we want to make sure that we′re carrying out the work with minimum disruption.

"The work will not affect customers′ water supply, but we appreciate that there may be some short term disruption to traffic once it begins and we′d like to thank our customers in advance for their patience."

Temporary traffic lights and pedestrian crossings will be in place, as the work progresses along Shields Road between Morrison′s roundabout and the junction of Algernon Road.

The project will improve tap water quality for around 500,000 customers, as the mains are cleaned and upgraded across some 18 different locations in Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside.
