The world is on the brink of the next evolution in mobile technology.

With the arrival of the impending 5G network, comes unprecedented benefits for customers, communities and households.

Set to be over ten times faster than your typical mobile phone connection, and similar to fibre home broadband, 5G will give technology a supercharged boost.

And this summer, some of the world′s most innovative minds and industry experts are coming together at Northumbrian Water′s 2019 Innovation Festival to explore what that means for utilities.

Communications giant, O2, who are already staking steps to pave the way for the rollout of 5G in the UK, will lead a ‘sprint′ at the Festival, to discuss how 5G can create seamless societies and connected communities and industries.

Martin Jackson, Head of Strategy and Enterprise Architecture at Northumbrian Water, said: "5G is the driving force behind the fourth industrial revolution and it is set to completely redefine how we live and work."

"The 5G network will mean everything can be connected, enabling data to flow in near real-time between humans, sensors and machines. At the Innovation Festival, we will be exploring how this will transform a range of industries, examining practical applications for technologies such as smart cities, infrastructure, construction and manufacturing.

"We′re already trialling a number of smart devices to monitor the water and wastewater network, which will provide benefits for our customers and the environment. With 5G, we would be able to supercharge this, better connect our teams, drive smarter operations and use increased automation.

"We′ll have a really diverse group of creative thinkers in the room with us at the Innovation Festival sprint, and together with the experts at O2, I′m really excited to explore this new generation of connectivity and create entirely new possibilities for our people and our customers."

David O′Brien, Head of Utilities at O2, said: "O2 is working in partnership with British industry, encouraging businesses, big and small, to engage with the possibilities of 5G technology.

"This Innovation Festival will help uncover and substantiate further use cases that will bring business benefits while also helping to unlock new 5G enabled revenue streams."

The Northumbrian Water Innovation Festival takes place at Newcastle Racecourse from 8 to 12 July, where more than 3,000 people from some of the most influential and innovative organisations right around the globe are expected.

They will be working to come up with a year′s worth of work in a week, producing ideas and solutions to tackle major social and environmental challenges.
