Report of the advisory mission to Doñana (Spain) published

  • Report of the advisory mission to Doñana (Spain) published
    El Rocio, Doñana.
  • In February 2020 the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, IUCN and the Convention on Wetlands undertook a joint mission to the widely known Doñana Ramsar Site at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River in Spain.

About the entity

Ramsar
The Convention on Wetlands, called the Ramsar Convention, is the intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

The international team was well received by the local management authorities and representatives of the Spanish Ministries of Culture and of Ecological Transition. They worked intensively to assess the different pressures on the iconic protected area, and to analyse and to better understand the hydrological functioning of the floodplain marshes on the one hand, and on the other the groundwater-fed hydrology of the dune region which is under strong pressure from agricultural practices and tourist development around the protected areas.

The findings of the Mission will be on the agenda of the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee in July; they can be accessed here.
