Accra wastewater treatment plant in Ghana will be expanded

  • Accra wastewater treatment plant in Ghana will be expanded

About the entity

Sewerages Systems Ghana Limited (SSGL), a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Ghanaian owned, is launching the expansion of its wastewater treatment plant in the capital Accra, informs Construction Review.

SSGL is an engineering, construction and procurement company with a focus on the provision of sewage treatment and disposal. It has selected French environmental technology company EMO to expand and upgrade the facility. The wastewater treatment plant’s capacity will increase from the current 2,000 cubic metres to 3,500 cubic metres per day.

SSGL’s Managing Director Florence Cobbold explained the upgraded plant will be able to “screen solid waste such as used sanitary napkins, nappies, etc. from the wastewater in and around Accra using state-of-the-art technology”.

As part of its contract, EMO will implement a capacity building programme dealing with the technology to be installed at the Accra sewage treatment plant. The idea is to facilitate the transfer of knowledge to the Ghanaian staff in charge of managing the refurbished plant.

The sanitation project will improve wastewater management in the Ghanaian capital. Since SSGL inaugurated the wastewater treatment plant in Accra in 2012, it has built others in Adjen Kotoku, James Town, Kumasi and other communities in Ghana.

Work on the wastewater treatment plant in Kumasi, the country’s second largest urban area, in the region of Ashanti, is nearly complete, according to Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Executive Chairman of JGC. He also announced construction work has begun on similar plants in the Western, Tema and Tamale regions.
