A consortium led by Aegea, Brazil’s largest private sanitation company, and firms Perfin and Kinea, were awarded on Friday a PPP contract offered by Sanepar, the Paraná state utility, reports BNamericas.
The selected group will collaborate with Sanepar to deliver sewage services in 16 cities located in the metropolitan region of Curitiba and along the coast of Paraná, benefitting 640,000 people. The objective is to guarantee that 90% of the population in these cities has access to sewage collection and treatment services by 2033, aligning with the goal set by the Sanitation Framework.
The contract will have a duration of 24 years and five months and has an investment of 1.2 billion reais (US$250 million).
The winning consortium will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of sewerage and effluent collection, transport, treatment and disposal services.
There were four leading water companies and consortia in the bidding process, including Acciona Saneamento, Iguá Saneamento and the group Consórcio Parceria Paranaense de Saneamento, created by MLC Infra Construção, Cembra Engenharia, Dang Construtora, Castilho Engenharia and Construferri Saneamento.
Claudio Stabile, CEO of Sanepar, said to BNamericas: "This PPP auctioned today is one of the steps we're taking to achieve the objectives of providing water and sewerage coverage for the entire Paraná population before the date determined by the law, which is 2033."
"As part of this effort to advance with the full coverage of the population, we're going to hold two more bidding processes for other PPP contracts before the end of this year," he added.
“We are coming to partner with the State, make investments and help Paraná to promote this difficult journey, but possible thanks to initiatives like this, to universalize sanitation and catch up with this delay, which is what needs to be done throughout Brazil,” said Leandro Marin, Vice President of Operations at Aegea.
