AF Bygg Syd, a subsidiary of Norwegian construction group AF Gruppen, has been awarded a contract worth approximately SEK 530 million (around USD 57.8 million, excluding VAT) by the Municipality of Trelleborg to overhaul and expand the Sjöviksverket wastewater treatment facility in southern Sweden.
The plant, which first came into operation in 1967, will undergo both extensive new construction and refurbishment works to bring it in line with future capacity demands and increasingly stringent environmental regulations. Key improvements will cover treatment process modernisation, expanded throughput capacity, enhanced sludge management and a range of energy efficiency upgrades.
The project is being delivered through a collaborative contracting approach. The first phase, covering design and planning, has already been concluded, and works are now moving into the construction phase. Completion is scheduled for final inspection on 30 May 2030.

The Sjöviksverket upgrade reflects a broader trend across Scandinavia, where ageing water and wastewater infrastructure is being modernised to secure long-term service reliability and resource efficiency. Investments of this scale signal a growing municipal commitment to long-term water resilience and responsible resource management.
AF Bygg Syd will begin construction immediately, with the fully upgraded facility expected to serve the Trelleborg region well into the coming decades.
