American Water completes $315 million acquisition of Nexus Water Group systems across eight states

The deal, originally announced in May 2025, received all required approvals from state public utility commissions and other regulatory bodies, with the process concluded on 21 May 2026. Approximately 70 employees from Nexus Water Group affiliates have joined American Water's state operations as part of the transition.

John Griffith, President and CEO of American Water, described the acquisition as strategically significant: "We look forward to leveraging our scale and size to deliver safe, clean, reliable and affordable water and wastewater services to these 47,000 new customer connections and to welcoming the local employees who already call these communities home."

The closure of this deal is part of a broader restructuring process at Nexus Water Group, which has been divesting assets outside its core geographies. In February 2026, the Texas-based utility agreed to sell its Nevada and Oregon systems to California Water Service Group for approximately $218 million, adding around 36,000 connections to the western utility's portfolio. That deal is expected to close by end of 2026, pending regulatory approval.

In a statement marking the completion of the American Water deal, Nexus CEO Rob MacLean said the company is now focused on what remains: "With our new, focused footprint, we are well-positioned to build on our competitive edge in the water and wastewater industry."

American Water, which serves approximately 14 million people across 14 states, is committed to ensuring a seamless transition for its new customers, who will have access to its online account management portal and a range of billing assistance programmes.
