Essential Utilities has announced that its subsidiary Aqua Pennsylvania has completed the acquisition of the Greenville Municipal Water Authority in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, for $18 million. The transaction, approved by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) on 15 January 2026, transfers the ownership of the local drinking water system serving more than 2,900 customers in Greenville Borough and the neighbouring Hempfield and West Salem Townships.
The purchase follows Aqua Pennsylvania’s acquisition of the Greenville Sanitary Authority’s wastewater system in 2025, expanding the company’s presence in the community’s water and wastewater services.
“Our customers in Greenville and the surrounding communities already count on us for safe and reliable wastewater service,” said Essential Utilities Chairman and CEO Christopher Franklin. “Now, they’ll be able to count on us to provide them with the highest quality drinking water. We are committed to investing in upgrades to the water system in Greenville that will bring long-term benefits to our customers.”
According to the company, approximately $10 million will be invested in the system over the next decade. The network includes around 40 miles of water mains. Planned upgrades aim to strengthen operational performance and help the system comply with regulatory, environmental and cybersecurity requirements.
Marc Lucca, President of Aqua Pennsylvania, highlighted the importance of infrastructure investment for maintaining drinking water quality. “Investing in water infrastructure is not optional; it is essential for drinking water quality,” he said. “The repairs and upgrades planned for the water system in Greenville will improve reliability and service for our customers at the start and for years to come.”
Tom Strahler, Chairman of the Greenville Water Authority Board, stated: “The Greenville Water Authority has proudly served this community for over 100 years, and this decision was not made lightly.”
Following the closing of the transaction, customer base rates will remain unchanged. Any future adjustments would require approval from the PUC. Eligible customers will also gain access to Aqua’s Customer Assistance Program (CAP) and the Aqua Aid hardship fund.
