Bahrain is progressing with a series of large-scale sewerage infrastructure projects as part of its long-term programme to expand and modernise the national wastewater network. Reports Zaywa. Current works across several areas of the kingdom are valued at more than BD11 million (approximately USD 29 million), reflecting a sustained focus on improving wastewater services and supporting future urban growth.

The Ministry of Works has highlighted that the ongoing investments are aimed at enhancing public health standards, strengthening environmental protection and extending sewerage coverage to communities that have long awaited connection to the main network.

One of the most significant schemes is a major sewerage transmission project linked to the Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway corridor. The project involves the construction of a primary sewer line designed to serve existing neighbourhoods and accommodate future development along the corridor. According to Works Minister Ibrahim Al Hawaj, the first phase has already been completed using modern tunnelling techniques, with further stages currently under construction.

“The total cost of this project exceeds BD35 million (around USD 93 million),” he said. “Once completed, it will connect previously unserved areas to the sewerage network along the Shaikh Isa Bin Salman corridor and support future urban expansion.”

In the Northern Governorate’s Fourth Constituency, sewerage projects with a combined value of about BD11.2 million (roughly USD 29.7million) are under implementation or scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2027. The schemes cover Abu Quwah, Al Qadam, Jabalat Habashi and Sehla, with progress ranging from early construction stages to works nearing completion. Together, they are expected to provide wastewater services to more than 1,500 properties. Further sewerage developments are planned in Salmabad, where construction in selected blocks is due to begin in the final quarter of 2026, subject to the completion of technical procedures.

Members of Parliament have welcomed the advances while urging closer on-site supervision to accelerate delivery. “These sewerage projects have been awaited for more than 24 years,” said MP Hassan Ibrahim, calling for stronger oversight to ensure deadlines are met.

The ministry has reiterated its commitment to working with lawmakers and other stakeholders to deliver wastewater infrastructure projects on time and within approved budgets, reinforcing sewerage investment as a cornerstone of Bahrain’s sustainable development agenda.
