The Corpus Christi City Council has approved a $169 million agreement with Evangeline Laguna LP to purchase groundwater rights covering approximately 23,000 acres of land north of Sinton.
The agreement could provide the city with up to 12 million gallons of water per day, with an option to expand capacity to 24 million gallons per day. Evangeline Laguna LP has 180 days to obtain the necessary permits for drilling, production, and transport of groundwater.
City officials project that the new water source could become available by early November 2026, aligning with the period when current reservoir supplies are expected to reach critical levels.
The council’s approval is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Corpus Christi’s long-term water supply as regional drought conditions continue to affect surrounding communities, including Beeville. Earlier this week, leaders from Corpus Christi, Beeville, Alice, and Mathis met to discuss the water situation and explore potential solutions.
