DEWA commissions a water reservoir connecting it to Dubai's water network

  • DEWA commissions water reservoir connecting it to Dubai's water network

About the entity

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has launched a new water reservoir in Enkhali, connecting it to the city's water network, reports the Government of Dubai Media Office. This reservoir, with a capacity of 120 million imperial gallons (MIG) and a cost of AED 287.8 million, is part of DEWA's ongoing efforts to enhance Dubai's electricity and water infrastructure and increase water storage capacity.

"Water security is a national priority for the UAE. The UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 aims to ensure sustainable access to water during normal and emergency conditions, addressing future water security challenges in the long run."

The Enkhali reservoir, along with those in Lusaily, Hassyan, and Hatta, supports DEWA's strategy to boost the efficiency and reliability of water networks, enhance water flow, and expand water reserves to meet Dubai's growing demand and sustainable development goals. Upon completion, these reservoirs will increase the storage capacity to 1121.3 MIG of desalinated water from the current 1001.3 MIG.

Additionally, these reservoirs complement the Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project for desalinated water, whose first phase DEWA has completed. The ASR project, expected to be fully operational by 2025, will have the capacity to store up to 6,000 million imperial gallons of water, making it the world's largest ASR system for storing potable water and retrieving it in emergencies," said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

Abdullah Obaidullah, Executive Vice President of Water and Civil at DEWA, noted that the Enkhali reservoir meets the highest international standards.
