The South Korean conglomerate Doosan has awarded Alucor, a prominent EPC contractor in the Middle East, a contract for the Shuaibah 3 IWP project, a significant seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant in Saudi Arabia, reports Zawya.
Once finalized, the project, located 110 kilometers south of Jeddah in the Shuaibah region, is poised to become one of the largest desalination facilities in the kingdom.
Alucor has been chosen to provide mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation installation for Shuaibah 3 IWP which will boast a 600,000 cubic meters per day capacity.
The project will transform and replace the existing IWPP, to transition from an energy-intensive power generation and thermal desalination facility to an advanced SWRO desalination plant, supplemented by solar power. The project is anticipated to have a significant positive environmental impact, including an estimated annual reduction of nearly 45 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions and preservation of 22 million barrels of light crude oil.
This project is spearheaded by a special purpose vehicle, the Shuaibah Three Water Desalination Company, established by Saudi utility developer ACWA Power and Badeel, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, PIF.
