DuPont has been selected as the preferred supplier for Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology by United Utilities’ Enterprise following a competitive tender process. This high-performance filtration system, used in wastewater treatment, will help produce cleaner water more consistently and boost capacity where needed.

The MBR technology will be deployed at multiple wastewater treatment facilities across the North West of England, including Eccles, Salford, and Wigan. The Wigan site is expected to house the UK’s largest MBR, serving a population of over 437,000 people.

James Gray, Key Account Manager at DuPont, said: “We’re looking forward to working closely with United Utilities’ Enterprise through the design and delivery phases, and to supporting United Utilities operationally as the technology is brought into service.”

James Davies, Regional Delivery Manager at United Utilities’ Enterprise, added: “Procuring MBR technology at scale and doing it earlier in the AMP, gives us the benefits of economies of scale, greater certainty and quicker delivery, alongside improved standardisation and long-term operational value. It also helps us meet tighter water quality requirements for the environment which will benefit the communities we serve,” he explained.

This contract is part of United Utilities’ £13 billion investment over the next five years, marking the company’s largest investment in water and wastewater infrastructure in a century. The funds will be used to enhance more than 500 km of rivers, lakes, and bathing waters, while ensuring a reliable supply of drinking water for millions of customers.

United Utilities’ Enterprise operates as a single, integrated delivery team, partnering with companies like C2V, Costain, Jacobs, Murphy, Kier Group, Mott MacDonald Bentley, and MWH Treatment through a collaborative framework.
