Egypt plans to offer its first package of seawater desalination projects to the private sector in Q3 2023, revealed Sayed Ismail, Deputy Minister of Housing for Infrastructure Affairs, during an interview with Asharq Business on Tuesday.
According to an article published by ZAWYA, the country aims to develop 29 water desalination projects as part of its long-term plan to increase the production of desalinated water.
The documents of the projects’ first package will be ready in the next three to four months and are being prepared by the Ministry of Housing alongside the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) and other consultants.
Ismail also said that Egypt has set six five-year water desalination plans extending to 2050. Furthermore, the first plan targets a 3.3 million cubic meter of desalinated water, with the aim of reaching 5.9 million cubic meters.
Egypt in this way is set to achieve a total desalination capacity of approximately 8.8 million cubic metres per day (m3/day) by 2050, with an estimated investment of $8 billion.
At the beginning of May, the country prequalified 17 consortia to be invited to the tendering process of the development of a number of seawater desalination plants powered by renewable energy sources in different locations across Egypt under the First Phase of Egypt’s water desalination program.
