Energy Recovery has announced five newly contracted wastewater projects in India, where several of its PX® Pressure Exchanger® (PX) energy recovery devices will be installed in industrial reverse osmosis (RO) plants. The new orders cover a range of water intensive sectors, including textiles, photovoltaic manufacturing, steel and petrochemical refining.
The awards come as India faces mounting pressure on its water resources. The country holds close to a fifth of the world's population yet has access to only around 4% of global freshwater reserves, and demand is expected to reach twice the available supply by 2030. Stricter discharge rules and a stronger emphasis on industrial water reuse are pushing operators toward reverse osmosis treatment.
All five contracts are for zero liquid discharge (ZLD) systems, a treatment approach that removes all liquid waste from industrial sites but typically requires significant energy input. Energy Recovery's PX technology is designed to cut the electricity needed to run these systems.
David Kim Hak, Vice President of Wastewater at Energy Recovery, commented: "India is moving quickly toward water reuse and ZLD, and that shift puts real pressure on the energy economics of industrial water treatment. Operators across these industries are now designing energy recovery devices into their systems from the start. Bringing the proven efficiency and reliability of our PX technology to these applications helps them lower operating costs and emissions while reducing their exposure to volatile power prices."
