Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) is gearing up to integrate cutting-edge technology into its water distribution management, aiming to significantly reduce leaks across its network, reports Zawya. This initiative forms a crucial part of the company’s comprehensive Transformation Roadmap.

Advanced leak detection tools

To reinforce its efforts in minimizing water wastage, EtihadWE will implement sophisticated technologies such as SmartBall and data loggers. These innovative tools are designed to offer real-time detection of potential leaks within the water distribution system. The SmartBall, equipped with advanced sensors, will travel through pipelines, transmitting data on any detected leaks. In tandem, data loggers will provide continuous monitoring of water flow, identifying irregularities that might indicate leaks.

Additionally, EtihadWE plans to enhance its leak detection capabilities by installing extra meters and narrowing their coverage areas through a technique known as district metering. This method allows for more accurate leak detection by dividing the network into smaller, more manageable zones, enabling the company to swiftly pinpoint and address leaks, including those located underground.

Tackling Non-Revenue Water (NRW)

Efficient water management is critical in the UAE, a nation characterized by scarce freshwater resources. A key aspect of this is reducing non-revenue water (NRW), which refers to water that is lost before it reaches customers due to issues such as equipment malfunctions or inaccurate meter readings. NRW poses a significant challenge as it involves water that has already undergone desalination and is being transported but is not fully accounted for in terms of quantity or revenue.

This initiative aligns with the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 and the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, both of which prioritize sustainable and responsible water management practices. EtihadWE’s efforts to curb NRW directly support these national strategies, aiming to bolster the sustainability of the country's water resources.

The company is also nearing the completion of a large-scale deployment of smart meters, which will further its objectives of efficient water management and improved customer service.

Eng Yousif Al Ali, CEO of EtihadWE, commented, “Our plan to reduce non-revenue water is an integral part of our ambitious five-year Transformation Roadmap. By investing in cutting-edge technologies and refining our infrastructure, we aim to strengthen our network across the Northern Emirates and contribute to the UAE’s national water security and sustainability goals.”

COO Eng. Abdulla Al Khemeiri added, “Implementing advanced monitoring and control technologies is essential for proactive and accurate data on leakage rates. This is a crucial step in advancing our water management systems and ensuring enhanced water security.”
