Egypt's Minister of International Cooperation, Rania Al Mashat, signed a financial arrangement with the French Development Agency (AFD) totaling €50 million. As well as an additional grant of €1.5 million, reports Egypt Today.
The collaboration aims to support the finalization of the third phase of the Al Gabal Al Asfar Wastewater Treatment Plant. Located in Cairo, it is the largest wastewater treatment plant in the Middle East and North Africa, treating 1,800,000 m3/day, according to Hassan Allam Holding.
Al-Mashat also oversaw the signing of an additional grant agreement between the European Union (EU) and AFD, amounting to €10 million. With this, the collective funding for the project totals €61.5 million.
The third phase of the wastewater treatment plant will enable it to process an additional one million cubic meters of wastewater daily, and by 2040, the upgraded plant is projected to serve approximately 17.5 million citizens.
Employing tertiary treatment technology, the plant can produce water suitable for irrigation and generate biogas, fulfilling 80 percent of its electricity needs.
Al-Mashat highlighted that water projects comprise 20 percent of Egypt’s development cooperation portfolio.
